Return to the South Island: Day One

Yesterday we took the ferry to the South Island to begin our minivan adventures. Dejan drove through the winding hills of the Marlborough Sounds to reach the farm campsite we had already booked. We were greeted with rain, warm muffins, two full bags of animal treats, and some hiking advice.

Despite the fact that I woke up thinking I was in a coffin, our first night in the van was a success. There's a certain feeling of freedom that comes with being able to drive with all your belongings and your house anywhere you want!

We didn't manage to do the big hike we wanted to yet today because of rain, so instead we explored the area a little bit. We went to the only restaurant within walking distance, which looked like it was built straight into someone's living room (which it probably actually was), but it had electronic club music playing in the background, and advertised its Halloween party with "DJ Tweek." Once a German group left we were the only ones there, but given their wide array of alcoholic beverages I assume they get a solid supply of locals coming in the evenings.

The walk there looked like this for most of the way...

After lunch it was time to visit the animals, starting with Molly the pig (who bears a strong resemblance to Missy the pig from Mariah and my first Wwoofing farm...). She happily (and noisily) gobbled up any of the treats I set in front of her.

Next were the sheep, who are unlike any sheep I've ever met. They came racing over to us right away, even occasionally jumping on us! In other words, they're the exact opposite of the sheep herds I've helped with on the farm.

Oh yeah, and chickens walked all around the campsite. I got the chance to practice my chicken clucking noises, which Dejan was obviously super impressed by...

Tomorrow we'll hopefully hike, then drive elsewhere to try our first day of "real" freedom camping, using only what we have since there won't be any facilities (besides a portoloo). Wish us luck!
